Gardaí are investigating the discovery of what appear to be human skeletal remains in a lorry load of sand being used to redevelop a sports field in Co Donegal.

The sand from a quarry in Gweedore was delivered to the training pitch at the Naomh Bríd GAA Club in Ballintra early this morning.

The remains, which comprise of a skull and several other bones, were discovered by the lorry driver as he was unloading sand shortly after 7.30am.

Garda officers from the Ballyshannon and Glenties divisions are investigating the discovery. A Garda spokesman said the scene had been preserved and a local coroner had been notified.

He said gardaí were carrying out investigations at the training pitch and at the quarry site in Gweedore. But he said it was too soon to say where the remains originated.
