Slane sealed off for U2 concert

Preparations for tomorrow's concert at Slane Castle are being finalised today

Preparations for tomorrow's concert at Slane Castle are being finalised today. Traffic restrictions will be in place around Slane village from this evening. The Garda says the village will be sealed off to vehicles except those of residents from 8 p.m. today until 3 a.m. on Sunday.

Diversions will be in place on the N2 for traffic travelling north and south. They will be in operation at Ardee and at Kilmoon Cross, which means traffic to Dublin from Louth, Monaghan and Northern Ireland should divert at the roundabout north of Ardee. A sign will indicate the route to the M1.

Traffic to the North will divert at Kilmoon Cross on the N2 north of Ashbourne and travel through Duleek and Drogheda where it will take the N1 as far north as its intersection with the M1. The Garda has urged concertgoers to use public transport. Dublin Bus is providing 200 buses for the event. They will operate from Upper O'Connell Street, departing every 20 minutes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For those driving, car-parks will be available. Those who park illegally are warned their vehicles will be towed away and impounded.

In addition, the Garda has warned concert-goers not to trespass onto grounds or lands adjacent to the river Boyne. "We would ask that the concert-goers co-operate with the stewards and gardai in this regard and ensure that a day, which can be so enjoyable, be not marred by any tragedies," a spokesman said.

They also warned that touts and fans with counterfeit tickets will not get in.

Undercover gardai will be watching for drug dealing and a special court will be in session throughout the day to deal with people arrested.

The father of U2 lead singer Bono will be buried later today.

Mr Bob Hewson (75), who died from cancer on Tuesday, will be buried at Old Balgriffin Cemetery following a service at the Church of the Assumption, Howth, at 1 p.m. The chief mourners will be his sons Norman and Paul (Bono). Their mother Iris died some time ago.
