Sligo Corporation is facing a threat of industrial action after officials complained that too many meetings were being held and alleged they were being subjected to bullying by some councillors.

Officials have said that in future they will attend only one evening meeting a month as they are legally required to. Over recent years there has been an average of three meetings a month.

The issue arose at Monday night's meeting when arrangements were being made for a planning meeting to be held next Monday. The county manager, Mr Hubert Kearns, and town clerk, Mr John McNabola, indicated that officials would not be attending. They would attend one evening meeting a month and any others held during working hours.

Mr McNabola also claimed officials were being subjected to bullying by some councillors.

The Mayor of Sligo, Mr Sean MacManus, said he believed the issue could be resolved. On allegations of bullying, he felt it was "wrong to penalise all councillors for the alleged behaviour of a minority".
