David Howell, beaten in a play-off the last two weeks, can make it third time lucky tomorrow after a spectacular eagle-eagle finish to his third round in the BMW Championship at Wentworth today.
Blustery conditions proved troublesome for others. World number three Ernie Els slumped to a 75 and both Luke Donald and Miguel Angel Jimenez closed with triple-bogey eights.
But Howell suddenly leapt from four under par to eight under with a sparkling 66 and, having started the day 30th, suddenly found himself in joint second place only a stroke behind surprise leader Peter Hedblom.
Hedblom, who burst three clear with a 65 late in the second round, suffered in the windy conditions when he bogeyed the first and third. But the 35-year-old steadied with five successive pars.
Dubliner Paul McGinley, second overnight, also bogeyed the first and third, but in between came a birdie two.
At seven under, however, he had been overtaken not only by Howell, but also Argentina's big-hitting Angel Cabrera, second to Scott Drummond a year ago.
Cabrera turned in 34, bogeyed the 10th, but then birdied the next, eagled the 509-yard 12th and birdied the short 14th.
Nick O'Hern and Padraig Harrington, third and fourth at halfway, both fell back by taking 39 to the turn. The Australian was three under, Harrington a stroke further back.
