Several soccer fans have been killed and hundreds more injured after part of the roof of a stadium grandstand caved in during a game in north-eastern Iran.

More than 20,000 people were at the Mottaqi Stadium in Sari, 155 miles north-east of the capital, Tehran, watching a game between two Iranian teams.

Victims were taken to the Bu Ali Hospital in the city.

A telephonist at the hospital said the injured were packed into hallways and even in the courtyard.

He said many were "critically" injured.

Officials and witnesses at the stadium confirmed several people had been killed.

They said the stadium was "old and overcrowded".

Tehran television, which was showing the game live, suddenly cut off transmission after the accident.
