Five killed in three separate road incidents in 48 hours

In Co Laois three locals were killed in a single vehicle crash on Sunday

Five people have been killed in three separate road crashes in the past 48 hours.

In Co Laois three locals were killed in a single vehicle crash on Sunday, while in Donegal a backseat passenger was killed when the car in which he was travelling hit a bollard; and in Limerick, a young man who was knocked down, died.

John Hegarty (21) from Buncrana, was killed when the car in which he was a passenger crashed into a bollard at Tooban, outside Burnfoot, at about 11.40pm on Sunday. Two other men, an 18-year-old and a 21-year-old, were brought to Letterkenny General Hospital but their injuries are not life threatening.

Garda Supt Eugene McGovern appealed for anybody who may have been on the road between Burnfoot and Buncrana to come forward.

A man in his late 20s died in Limerick after he was knocked down by a van yesterday. The man was walking along the N21 Croagh to Rathkeale Road at Blossomhill at about 3.30am when the fatal collision occurred.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to University Hospital Limerick for a postmortem.

Gardaí appealed for witnesses to contact Newcastle West Garda station on 069-20650; the Garda confidential telephone line, 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Meanwhile funeral arrangements have been made for the three people who died following the Laois car crash. Angela Kelly (35), Orla Curry and Martin Brophy (both aged 20) were killed when the car in which they were travelling hit a road sign at Middlemount on the Rathdowney to Abbeyleix road. A 16-year-old boy was also injured in the crash.

The funeral of Ms Kelly who is survived by her daughter Shannon, her parents Paul and Gillian, sisters and a brother will be held tomorrow at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Rathdowney at 1pm.

The funeral of Ms Curry who is survived by her parents Peter and Ann, will take place on Thursday at 1pm at St Canice’s church in Clough. And the funeral of Mr Brophy who is survived by his father Martin, his brothers and his sister will take place on Friday at 1pm at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Rathdowney.
