Madrid - A Spanish police officer was shot dead in a suburb of Madrid yesterday in a crime investigators said may have been carried out by the outlawed Marxist group GRAPO.
National Police Chief Juan Cotino said police had not ruled out that the shooting was the work of the First of October Antifacist Resistance Group, known as GRAPO, a shadowy Marxist guerrilla group.
A witness told state radio a gunman appeared to have been attempting to steal a car in the suburb of Carabanchel just south of Madrid. The victim was identified as Mr Francisco Sanz (28), recently married.
