The 2003 Special Olympics world games organising committee launched a campaign to recruit the 160 towns needed to host the teams from different countries worldwide.
Prior to the 10 days of competition in the greater Dublin area the teams need to have time to train and acclimatise in cities and towns throughout the country.
7,000 athletes along with 2,000 coaches from 160 countries are expected totravel to Ireland for the biggest sporting event of the year.
Letterkenny, the first host town chosen, was given a special dispensation and was twinned with Trinidad and Tobago following a special relationship which was struck up between athletes from the Donegal town and the Caribbean team.
The other successful applicants will be announced later this year.
