Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton hailed the performances of strikers Robbie Keane and Kevin Doyle following his side's comfortable 5-0 victory over San Marino last night.

Ireland did all that was required of them in their Euro 2008 qualifier against a team rated as the worst in Europe, ultimately taking the first Group D win of their campaign.

Andy Reid set the ball rolling with a deflected 20-yard free-kick in the seventh minute before Reading striker Doyle grabbed his first international goal on his fifth appearance.

Doyle headed home Kevin Kilbane's 24th-minute left-wing cross, with Keane then addind a hat-trick.

Wigan midfielder Kilbane was again the supplier from the left, allowing Tottenham striker Keane to chest the ball down before sliding it home past goalkeeper Federico Valentini.

Keane added his second just before the hour from the penalty spot before completing a first hat-trick of his international career by heading home number five in the 85th minute.

Keane now has 29 goals to his Ireland credit, and although the opposition was only lowly San Marino, he and Doyle appear to have the makings of a good partnership.

"The more they play together then the better they will become," said Staunton. "But they had one day's training together ahead of this game and it will probably be the same when we face San Marino again in early February.

"All we can hope for is that when we get them together for a few days it will give us the chance to work on things with the two of them.

"But they complement each other well because they are different types of centre-forward, which we need. Kevin is strong, will chase things into the channels and is very willing, while we know all about Robbie as he is clever and full of tricks.

"Given their ages, with Robbie just 26 and Kevin 23, then there's plenty of time for them to develop and they are learning all the time. For Kevin, the last two years for him have been unbelievable and he is going to learn a hell of a lot more over the next year or two."

"There's an awful lot to play for yet, so we won't be giving up."

Staunton was buoyed by the other Group D result of the night, with Germany held to a 1-1 draw in Cyprus. As far as Staunton is concerned, it proves the Germans and the Czech Republic are not going to have it all their own way and he added: "I'm very pleased.

"We scored five goals and it's a professional job done. That's all we could ask for, although the result in Cyprus makes things even more pleasing.

"I always knew there would be points won and lost along the way in this campaign, and there will be more won and lost that's for sure."
