LONDON - The pop star Sting caused an uproar in Britain yesterday by calling for legalisation of the drug ecstasy. The topic is highly charged in Britain because in the past two months two youths have died and another has fallen into a deep coma after taking the drug.
Sting said on television that Britain should follow the example of the Netherlands, where he said young people can have their ecstasy tablets tested before taking them. "It makes sense," he said.
