Irish actor and James Bond star Pierce Brosnan received an honorary OBE on Saturday for his outstanding contribution to drama and the British film industry.

The award was presented to the 50-year-old star at the British Ambassador's residence, Glencairn House, Sandyford, Dublin.

Receiving the award, Mr Brosnan said he felt humbled and "never dreamt of receiving an honour like this".

The actor and producer said he was proud his work enabled him to travel far and wide and allowed him "to be part of many great causes".

"As an Irishman, I'm flattered and honoured," he said.

Mr Brosnan is campaign chairman for the Entertainment Industry Foundation and was appointed special patron of UNICEF in December 2001.

The award was presented by the British Embassy defence attache, Col Paul Cummings, to the British Ambassador, Mr Stewart Elder, who formally presented it to Mr Brosnan.

The actor posed for photographs with his parents, his three children, Charlotte, Christopher and Seán, and his grandchild Isabella.

"This is a day to remember," he said.
