A fishing boat that had been in danger of sinking off the Co Galway coast is now making its way to a nearby harbour.

The vessel sent out a Mayday distress signal after it was reportedly holed off Connemara at 6.00am.

However, the one man on board managed to carry out temporary repairs and the vessel is now on the way to Mace Pier in south Connemara.

The Aran Island Lifeboat is escorting the boat on its route. Met Eireann had earlier issued a Small Craft Warning that winds off the west coast could reach up to Force 7 strength this morning.
