Strike disrupts work at plants

An unofficial strike yesterday seriously disrupted production at the Castlemahon Food Products plant in Co Limerick

An unofficial strike yesterday seriously disrupted production at the Castlemahon Food Products plant in Co Limerick. Pickets were placed by members of the ATGWU, affecting 170 workers.

A spokesman for the company said they had not been given a proper reason for the dispute and the action was in breach of the 1990 Industrial Relations Act. In a separate dispute, workers at a Limerick timber company staged an unofficial stoppage in support of a colleague who was suspended without pay.

The man refused to implement changes in work practices at James McMahon Ltd on the Dock Road. Five members of the Building and Allied Trades Union are taking part in the stoppage and are supported by 10 members of the Marine Port and General Workers' Union at the plant, who refused to pass the picket.
