The folks at Strokestown Park must be truly blessed because after what seemed like 40 days and 40 nights of unrelenting rain, they managed to open the newly restored pleasure gardens on the first fine day. The restoration is a labour of love that has been underway since 1987 and many of the guests assembled at the reception were keen gardeners who have been involved with the project over the years. Helen Dillon and Jonathan and Daphne Shackleton, all renowned for their own splendid gardens, helped with the work and were enjoying the results.

Nicholas and Jennifer Hales Pakenham Mahon represented the original owners of the house and seemed delighted with the restoration. It was another landmark for Westward Group's Jim Callery, who originally purchased the house in 1979 and prompted its restoration. He was there at the opening along with his cousin, Luke Dodd, who directed the campaign to restore the park and designed the garden with Jim Reynolds. Albert Reynolds TD formally opened the gardens and justice Hugh O'Flaherty and the Ireland Fund's Loretta Brennan Glucksman also came along. (See also page 11)
