A student garda rescued three men from Dublin's River Liffey early today. Two of the men had got into trouble when one of them tried to help the other out of the water around 3 a.m.
The pair had been swept down as far as Wolfe Tone Quay when the student officer arrived on the scene in response to an alarm call.
The 23-year-old student, a qualified lifeguard, managed to pull them over to the safety of a ladder at the quay wall.
He then rescued a third man, who had got into difficulties after diving in and attempting to help the garda.
All four were taken to hospital for treatment. Three of them, including the student garda, were later released. One man is said to be in a stable condition in hospital.
The student is based at Kilmainham Garda Station as part of his training.
