The disposable income of students has dropped by more than a third in the past two years, a new survey has found.

According to research commissioned by Allied Irish Banks (AIB), student income has fallen from €86 a week in 2009 to its present level of €55. Parents continued to be the main source of income at 35 per cent. The survey showed an increase in reliance on the student grant to subsidise incomes.

The AIB survey was carried out by market research agency W5. Some 6,500 people responded.

The Union of Students of Ireland wants the reversal of student grant cuts.
