Moscow - Nearly 50 people died and more than 300 others were injured in a stampede in a passageway leading to a Minsk subway station during a city festival yesterday, Interfax news agency cited police as saying.

Nearly 10,000 people were attending the Minsk beer festival late yesterday when people stormed the passageway leading to the Nemiga subway station in central Minsk during a thunderstorm.

A policeman who tried to stop the crowd from entering the subway was among the victims, Interfax said.

Two Minsk hospitals said earlier they were treating more than 100 people for injuries but some of the injured were also taken to other hospitals. Most of the injured suffered fractures and bruises.
