Survey into voter `apathy'

The National Youth Council of Ireland is to carry out a survey to establish why fewer young people now vote. The council said yesterday that at least half of voters under 25 did not vote in the local and European elections in June.

It will ask young people to participate in the survey by explaining in their own words why they did or did not vote. TDs and senators will also be asked for their views on the declining participation of young voters in the electoral process. The results of the survey are expected towards the end of the summer.
