Judges investigating the car crash which killed Diana, Princess of Wales, are hoping for a major breakthrough today when they interview the only survivor, her bodyguard, Mr Trevor Rees-Jones.
The speed of his recovery from horrific injuries has raised the prospect that he may be ready to reveal exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the accident. But doctors are warning that his fight back to physical health may not yet be matched by his memory.
It will only become clear how much Mr Rees-Jones can remember when two French judges, Judge Herve Stephan and Judge Marie Christine Devidal, are allowed to begin gentle questioning.
The two aim to be at the bedside of Mr Rees-Jones (29) at La Pitie Salpetriere Hospital in central Paris today, but first they need clearance from the doctor overseeing his recovery, Prof Pierre Coriat. He will make a final judgment this morning.
A picture claiming to show Princess Diana trapped in the wreckage of the car was placed on the Internet yesterday.
The photograph is one of a series of the late princess put together by a group called Rotten, which collects disturbing images for publication on the Internet. The dark, indistinct image - headlined "Purported Accident Photo" - appears to show a blonde woman apparently with blood on her face at the centre of a mangled heap of metal. There are people with yellow fluorescent jackets as worn by rescue crews.
