This is a reprint of the original Scott Moncrieff translation of Du cote de chez Swann, the first volume of Proust's vast roman fleuve, to which Moncrieff gave the English title Remembrance of Things Past. Swann's Way was first published in 1922, the year of Proust's death, and has been revised twice, by Terence Kilmartin in 1981, and D.J.
Enright in 1992. Penguin seems to be paying a 75th anniversary hommage to Proust's original translator, whose rather flowery version was a first introduction for Englishspeaking readers to a great modern masterpiece. To dip into the pages of this solid, well-printed edition is indeed to regain something of the flavour of lost time.
