Taipei - Vice-Premier Mr Chang Chun-hsiung, a veteran politician from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), is to be Taiwan's new premier, government sources said today.

Taiwan was plunged into turmoil after Mr Tang Fei resigned yesterday in a surprise move which observers said would heighten political instability and rock the stock market.

Observers said Mr Tang, who took office on May 20th, quit because of unresolved differences with President Chen Shui-bian over the construction of a $5.6 billion nuclear power project.
