Mr Eamonn Gavin, the victim in the "Tallaght Two" case, has called for a public inquiry into the State's handling of the case, writes Carol Coulter, Legal Affairs Correspondent. The theft of Mr Gavin's car almost 20 years ago led to the conviction of two young men, Joseph Meleady and Joseph Grogan, who were sentenced to five years' penal servitude.

Last March, the Court of Criminal Appeal certified a miscarriage of justice in the case, based on the non-disclosure of a document which indicated that gardai had shown Mr Gavin photographs before he identified the two young men. Mr Grogan and Mr Meleady will now be entitled to compensation.
