COLOMBO - Sri Lankan military officials said yesterday they believed Tamil rebels had completely overrun a key army camp, killing or capturing almost the entire garrison in what could be the army's worst defeat in the 13 year war.

However, the Deputy Defence Minister, Mr Anuruddha Ratwatte, said earlier that troops who had survived the attack were still holding part of the camp, although he was unable to give casualty figures.
