Tánaiste denies economy 'U-turn'

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has denied that the Government has engaged in a U-turn on economic policy.

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has denied that the Government has engaged in a U-turn on economic policy.

Mr Gilmore said Taoiseach Enda Kenny was attending the European council meeting.

"I am sure every member of the House would support the Taoiseach in the work he is undertaking today and tomorrow on behalf of the country," he added.

Mr Gilmore said the Taoiseach would report back to the House next week.

"As far as this country's strategy and approach are concerned, what the Taoiseach is doing today is representing Ireland and doing the very best for this country," he added.

"There is no U-turn of any kind."

Mr Gilmore was replying to Sinn Féin’s Mary Lou McDonald who referred to the  overnment’s "U-turn on its much-trumpeted strategy of getting a deal on the interest rate for the bailout."

She said she expected that when Mr Kenny reported to the Dáil next week, he would tell how the interest rate was on the table and that there was a result.

"I also expect the issue of burden sharing is being addressed in a concrete way and that he did not perform a U-turn on corporation tax," she added.
