The ferry, owned by the Tanzania Roads Company, is reported to have been carrying about 150 people when it sank.

The accident happened at around 11.00 GMT on the Kilombero River, some 180 miles west of Dar es Salaam, an area recently hit by torrential rains, the report said. The cause of the accident is not known.

Acting police chief Mr Juma Kondia told Radio Tanzania four bodies had been recovered. Twenty others had been injured and four of them were "critical". Efforts to recover other bodies were continuing, the police chief said.
