The Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, will today address the first United Nations World Summit on the Information Society in Geneva, Switzerland.

Over 60 World Leaders and heads of government will address the summit, which is expected to adopt a Declaration of Principles and Plan of Action on the global Information Society.

In his address to the summit, the Taoiseach is expected to focus on the issue of how the information society can benefit the global community and how the global community can shape its future development.

Following the address to the UN Summit, the Taoiseach will attend a Tripartite Social Summit in Brussels, Belgium. Together with the Italian Presidency and the President of the Commission, Mr Ahern will meet the social partners for talks on employment.

The focus of the summit will be the recently published report of the Employment Task Force, chaired by former Dutch prime Mmnister Mr Wim Kok and the Growth Initiative.

The Taoiseach will also meet with Mr. Kok following the summit later this afternoon. These meetings are part of the preparatory process for the European Council meeting next Spring on the Lisbon Agenda.  The Lisbon Agenda aims to make the EU the most competitive economy in the world by 2010 with more and better employment.
