The Taoiseach today welcomed warnings against xenophobia by the Pope and said the papal theme had a special relevance for the people of Ireland.
In a statement responding to the Pope's traditional New Year’s message Mr Ahern urged the people of Ireland and of Northern Ireland to reflect on the Pope's theme of dialogue between cultures.
"In welcoming the message from his Holiness I would exhort all to strive for a society where each one of us is treated on his or her own merits and not on the basis of prejudice or stereotype," Mr Ahern said.
Mr Ahern said the Belfast Agreement offered the chance for a new start.
"The troubles in Northern Ireland came about in part because of absence of true equality and respect for the cultures, traditions and human rights of all parts of the community," he said. "We now have the opportunity to put the past behind us."
