More than 370 tax-defaulters in the State made settlements with the revenue in excess of €43 million in the three months to the end of September this year.

This is the longest list of tax defaulters with the largest total tax settlement to date. According to the Revenue Commissioners 371 people made settlements including a fine or penalty worth a total of €43,166,243.39.

The data, published in Iris Oifigiúil indicate that five settlements exceeded €1 million.

A €3.7 million settlement by Mr John Smith, a company director with an address at Kilmashogue Manor, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16 with the largest settlement.

Mr Smith's case involved the underdeclaration of income tax and a bogus non resident account. He was charged €2.6 million in interest and penalties on a tax default of €1.16 million.

The second largest settlement was by O'Connor's Nenagh Shopping Centre Ltd, which made a settlement of €2.188 million for the underdeclaration of corporation tax, PAYE/PRSI and VAT. Some €1.45 million of the settlement was in interest and penalties.
