Damien English TD, one of the youngest members of the Dail, said young people are not getting the message that a car is a lethal weapon.

Speaking a young man today became the sixth person to lose his life in a road crash over the weekend, Mr English said: "This has been a tragic week for the young people of Ireland," he said.

"Most of the (road) deaths this week have been very, very young people and we're not getting the message across that it could be them, it can be their friends, it could be their family."

The Fine Gael deputy told RTE Radio it wasn't possible to cut road deaths through increased Garda patrols alone.

"So we need find other ways, other methods of enforcing," he said. "And another message that has to go out is that you will be caught, if you drive dangerously or drive badly."

The latest fatality brings to 303 the number of people killed on the roads so far this year.
