A schoolteacher who claimed he was sexually abused as a boy by a Catholic priest in Derry is taking court action after being told he is not entitled to compensation. The priest was acquitted of all 19 sex abuse charges on Thursday.

The 32 year old man, who works in London, has been granted leave to apply for a judicial review in the High Court in Belfast.

His action followed a letter from the Compensation Agency stating that his claim could not be considered because it was made after the legal time limit had expired.

The claim arises out of allegations he made against Father Edward Kilpatrick (53), parish priest of Murlog, Co Donegal, who was unanimously acquitted by a jury at Armagh Crown Court.

One of the grounds of his application for judicial review states that the normal time limit should not apply in his case because he was a minor when the alleged abuse took place.

A date for the review hearing has not yet been fixed.
