Seattle - A former elementary school teacher who bore the child of her 14-year-old student faces more than seven years in prison for child rape.

Ms Mary Kay LeTourneau (35), a married mother of four who taught at a suburban Seattle school until her arrest, has been jailed since August when she pleaded guilty to two counts of child rape.

Ms LeTourneau admitted having a sexual relationship with the boy that began when he was 13 and resulted in a daughter born in May who is being cared for by the boy's family. The case stirred controversy not only because of the sex-role reversal but because the teacher and the boy have been outspoken in describing their relationship as a love affair.

Ms LeTourneau's husband has filed for divorce and moved with their four children to Alaska.
