He was pronounced dead in hospital after the bicycle he was riding collided with a lorry at 4.45 p.m. at Corrin on the N8, two miles outside Fermoy.

Seven people died on roads in the Republic despite a large-scale Garda operation aimed at limiting road fatalities for the bank holiday weekend.

The latest death brings the number of road fatalities in the Republic to 215 for the year so far, a decrease of 18 on the same period last year.

The death of a 22-year-old man near Ballyshannon in Co Donegal in the early hours of this morning had brought the total number of fatalities to six in the Republic, while three died on roads in Northern Ireland.

The man, who has been named as Mr Patrick Broderick of Parkview, Ballyshannon, died when his car struck a wall shortly before 4.40 a.m. at Partnason.

It was aimed at limiting the number of road fatalities and injuries during the bank holiday period.

Earlier, it emerged a man's body lay undetected for almost four days after he crashed his car into a heavily wooded area in County Antrim.

The car left the Moneynick Road, between the M2 and the village of Toomebridge in county Antrim, in the early hours of Friday morning, police said.

The man, who was named as Mr Darren McGreevy of Toomebridge, was finally found yesterday evening in a densely wooded site just off the main road. His death brings the number of road deaths in Northern Ireland to 99 for the year.

This was the third person to be killed in Northern Ireland over the weekend. A 40-year-old Dutch woman was killed in a two-car collision near Enniskillen yesterday. The woman's 8-year-old daughter remains in hospital. It is understood the two were on holiday in the North at the time.

Meanwhile, a member of the clergy was killed in a three-car collision in Co Down yesterday. The accident happened on the A1 near Dromore.

Elsewhere a three-year-old Co Dublin boy who was critically injured in a weekend road accident died in Beaumont Hospital yesterday.

Connell Clarges, from Loughlinstown, had been in a critical condition since his transfer to the hospital from Co Wexford on Saturday, when his parents' car was involved in a collision with a lorry.

His nine-month old sister, Katie, died instantly in the crash, while their parents Paul and Gráinne Clarges suffered serious injuries, and are still being treated at Beaumont.

And gardaí yesterday named the victim of another road traffic incident that took place on Saturday. Mr Anthony McNamara (31) of Graigue, Adare, Co Limerick was killed when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a car at Cumeen, Adare at 5.50 p.m.

On Friday, an 80-year-old man was killed when the car he was driving struck a lorry at Rathcormack on the N8 between Cork and Fermoy.

Earlier the same day, Mr Daniel Carrie (18), Hillview, Drogheda, Co Louth died when the motorcycle he was riding hit a ditch at Proudstown, Co Meath.
