The one-day strike scheduled to close Tesco branches around the country tomorrow has been called off.
Following talks held at the Labour Court today, a recommendation is to be issued at noon tomorrow which is to be put to a ballot by the unions involved.
During a special sitting of the Labour Court in Sligo this afternoon, presided over by Labour Court Deputy Chairman Mr Kevin Duffy, SIPTU and Mandate representatives met with Tesco Ireland management to resolve the dispute which escalated following Tesco’s decision on Tuesday to withdraw its pay offer while the threat of strike remained.
Mr John Kane, National Industrial Secretary for SIPTU said the union welcomed the proposals that he said are being recommended by both sides for acceptance.
"In the interim and pending the outcome of a secret ballot of both unions, the disputes scheduled for tomorrow and next week have been postponed," he added.
Tesco welcomed the deferral of strike action, and said that all Tescostores nationally would be open for trading as usual tomorrow.
The dispute had threatened to close all 76 branches of the supermarket in the Republic tomorrow in the second one-day strike planned by Mandate and SIPTU. The unions had also planned further stoppages on Thursday and Friday next week.
