The dangers of alcohol abuse provided a theme for a group project prepared by three students from Castlecomer Community School in Kilkenny.

The project included a survey but also provided a peer-based warning message to help steer young people away from excessive drinking.

Bríd Collins, Carol Coogan and Catherine Whelan wanted to discover just how relevant alcohol is to young people in their daily lives and also to see how people's attitudes to alcohol changed as they grew older.

They developed a questionnaire and surveyed people from three different age groupings, 15- 18, 19-25 and those over 26. They will have final results and analysis done in time for the exhibition and initial judging rounds, which start tomorrow.

They also decided to highlight the dangers of alcohol abuse for their fellow students, and to that end they put together some pointers indicating the risks inherent in the misuse of alcohol at a young age.

They believe that fellow teenagers would relate much better to such a message if delivered by people of their own age rather than by authority figures.
