In the County of Leitrim there are two hills, Sighmor and Sigh-beg, and each of them has on its summit a rath that is occupied by the Good People.

These fairy colonies have been a theme of song and story for many years, for tradition says that there was a great battle between two parties in the valley near at hand. People have said that the rath on Sigh-beg was built over the remains of Fionn MacCumhail himself.

Acting on this belief, a former owner of the property built a huge monument of stones and of mortar, made in the shape of a man, and placed it on the summit of the hill. For some years the figure remained and could be seen for miles, but it was destroyed in a very violent storm.

Years afterwards it was repaired by another owner of the land, but again it fell. The country people say that it is useless to attempt to build it any more, and that the Good People only left it standing for so long in the first place because of their respect for the lord of the soil.
