The Love Song of J. Edgar Hoover, by Kinky Friedman (Faber & Faber, £4.99 in UK)

The title doesn't quite say it all, but it says a lot

The title doesn't quite say it all, but it says a lot. This is the country singer turned mystery writer's ninth novel, and it bears an uncanny resemblance to his first eight. His cast of likeable eccentrics remains the same, his plot still meanders along as unhurriedly as a Nashville classic and his one liners are as politically incorrect as ever; which shows a man who has either perfected his chosen craft or who ain't about to fix what was never broken in the first place. This wry little yarn pits the Kinkster, the two Ratsos, Rambam, McGovern, the puppet head, the lesbian dance class et al against the might of the FBI. Nobody wins, but then nobody loses either. Could be a cue for a country song - and if you're in the mood to sing along, you'll find the Kinkster in foot stompin' form.
