Since its foundation in 1985, the Iomha Ildanach theatre company has created some telling theatre. Much of this has appeared in their base at the tiny Crypt in Dublin Castle, which now houses their latest production. The Libertine, by English writer Stephen Jeffreys, tells the story of John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester in the reign of Charles II in the 17th century. The part is played by Niall O Sioradain (left).

It is a great deal more than mere biography. This is an examination, dramatically conceived and executed, of an outsider who would not serve the hierarchies and hypocrisies of his society. His excesses proclaimed his defiance as they undermined his life. It is a fascinating study, here powerfully brought to the stage in performances which illuminate its dark corners.
