A memorial dedicated to 128 people who lost their lives off the Waterford coast was officially unveiled at Dunmore East pier yesterday by the President, Mrs McAleese.
The moving ceremony was attended by relatives of those who died or were lost at sea.
Those remembered included the four Air Corps pilots who were killed when their helicopter crashed on the Tramore sand dunes last July, and crew members of the Jenalisa, which sank off Dunmore East four years ago.
"I know that all our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and friends and, indeed, all of those affected by such recent tragedies," the President told the large gathering. "Today we honour, remember and pay tribute in a tangible and permanent way to all those lost at sea.
"This memorial, which was originally conceived following the tragic sinking of the Jenalisa, also embraces those who did not return from sea, including two of the Jenalisa's crew. I hope this will be a place of quiet reflection and prayer and that it will serve as a focus for those who have no graves at which to grieve."
The President's closing words were in tribute to all those serving in the national rescue network. "We commend them, not only for their spectacular acts of bravery but also the day-in, day-out training in all weathers to answer our calls for help, whatever the time of the day or night. We extend a very special heartfelt thanks to all of them," she said.
Earlier yesterday, Mrs McAleese visited the Co Waterford village of Dunhill, where she officially opened a newly developed enterprise centre. She congratulated the entire community on their achievement which, she said, was a prime example of what could be done when people worked together.
"The success of this new centre is already evident from the number and variety of small businesses it supports . . . They are a testament to the spirit of co-operation and determination which is alive in this community." she said.
The President's final engagement was the official opening of the new Garden of Healing at Waterford Regional Hospital. The garden has been developed through the Waterford Healing Arts Trust and offers a quiet place for peace and solace for patients, staff and visitors.
