DURBAN - The Nobel peace laureate, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, yesterday threatened to resign from South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission if the ruling African National Congress (ANC) refused to seek amnesty for past human rights abuses.
Dr Tutu rejected the stance adopted by the ruling ANC's chief legal adviser, Mr Mathews Phosa, who has said the party will not approach the state funded commission for amnesty on the grounds that its fight against white rule was a "just struggle". Dr Tutu said the commission would serve no purpose if one side was to unilaterally declare itself blameless.
