Three people have died, including the gunman, during a shootout in a supermarket in New Jersey.
Police were called at about 4.30am after shots were fired inside a Pathmark store in Old Bridge, where employees were stocking shelves. The storw was shut at the time.
The gunman and shooting victims worked at the store and are from Old Bridge, a town of about 65,000 people about 60km southwest of New York.
Mayor Owen Henry said the gunman, an ex-Marine, had been employed at the store for about two weeks.
After showing up for work, he left the market and returned in military fatigues with an AK-47 rifle and an automatic pistol, shot the two victims and then himself, Mr Henry said.
"This is every mayor's nightmare," said Mr Henry, who took office in January.
