Hundreds of nationalist and loyalist youths gathered in the flashpoint Limestone Road area of Belfast yesterday evening, throwing bottles, stones and fireworks. There were also disturbances in the nearby White City and Longlands.

Disturbances broke out in Lurgan, Co Armagh at about 5 p.m. yesterday.

There were also reports of clashes between nationalist and loyalist gangs along the peace lines in east Belfast. At Strand Walk British Army technical officers dealt with two pipe bomb devices after an explosion was heard in the area at about 10.50 p.m. A number of items were removed for technical examination, police said.

Meanwhile, a man was taken to hospital after being attacked by 14 masked men in Strabane, Co Tyrone.

The man was first beaten in his home on Carlton Drive in the town, before being taken outside and shot in the leg.
