Three people are due to appear in court today over the murder of a man who was killed in front of his pregnant wife last week.

John Mongan, (30) was attacked by a gang wielding machetes and hatchets on Thursday while sleeping in bed with his wife at their home in Fallswater Street in west Belfast.

A man (36) has been charged with murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Another man (31) and a 15-year-old are also facing murder charges.

Three other men questioned at the weekend were released last night without charge.

Mr Mongan's wife, Julie (28), was overdue and due to be induced, and she later gave birth to a son. Mrs Mongan suffered a head wound in the attack.

Mr Mongan was a member of the Traveller community and had lived at the Fallswater address for only a few months.
