Three killed in weekend crashes on roads

Three people were killed in two road accidents over the weekend

Three people were killed in two road accidents over the weekend. A woman was killed in a single-car collision just outside Ennis, Co Clare, at about 4 p.m. yesterday. It is understood she was a passenger in the car

Separately, in Co Wicklow, gardaí will this morning begin interviewing witnesses following what has been described as one of the most horrific car crashes this year.

Two men were killed and five people injured in the two-car collision on Saturday afternoon at Scratnagh Cross, five miles north of Arklow on the N11 (see map below). Of the five in hospital, one is described as critically injured, and the others as "fair".

It is believed those in the north-bound car - three men and a 10-year-old boy - were travelling from Wexford to Saturday's senior football qualifier match between Wexford and Derry at Parnell Park, Dublin.

The front-seat passenger in the car, a man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Those in the second car are understood to have been a family from Greystones Co Wicklow. They were a mother, father and a daughter in her 20s.

The father, understood to have been the driver and in his 50s, died later at Loughlinstown hospital.

The others were all taken to St Vincent's hospital in Dublin, with the boy from the north-bound car transferred to Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin.

The mother and daughter in the south-bound car were in a "fair" condition last night. Of the other two men in the north-bound car, one is described as "fair", the other "critical".

Gardaí in Arklow yesterday described the scene as "absolutely horrific", and expect to interview 16 witnesses. The victims' names had not been released last night.

The weekend fatalities bring to 210 the number of people killed on Irish roads so far this year.
