Israeli soldiers backed up by tanks have moved into the Palestinian autonomous sector of Ramallah in the West Bank, wounding three Palestinians.

The Palestinians were wounded in fierce exchanges of fire between the Israelis and security services controlling roads into the town.

Two Israeli soldiers were also wounded after moving in on the main Jerusalem-Ramallah road from the south, Palestinian sources said.

At 4:45 a.m. (0145 GMT) the Israeli forces were near the Voice of Palestine radio and television buildings, southwest of Ramallah, the sources said.

The Israeli army refused to confirm or deny the reports.
