Three people were wounded today in an apparent mortar or missile attack near the US-led coalition compound in Baghdad, the Pentagon said.

"There were two explosions. Three persons were wounded from the coalition. One was treated on the scene and the other two were taken to the 28th Combat Support Hospital," said Army Lieutenant Colonel Jim Cassella, a Pentagon spokesman.

He said it was not known whether the wounded were military or civilian, adding that the blasts occurred inside of the sprawling, US-controlled "Green Zone" that includes both US military basing and the headquarters of the Coalition Provisional Authority, or CPA, headed by Mr Paul Bremer.

"The blasts occurred outside of the CPA compound. It was not clear where the attacks were launched from, but we suspect it was with mortars or perhaps missiles," Colonel Cassella said.<
