Irish international rugby player Shane Horgan, who is charged with assaulting a doorman at a Galway nightclub, was sent for trial to Galway Circuit Criminal Court when he appeared before Galway District Court yesterday.
Mr Horgan (22), of Tara, Bellewstown, Co Meath, has been capped five times for Ireland.
He is charged under Section 3 of the Non-fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997, with assaulting a doorman, Mr John Fahy, outside the Alley nightclub at Ball Alley Lane, Eyre Square, Galway, on October 31st, 1999, causing him harm.
Mr Breffny Gordon, defending, said Mr Horgan, who was pleading not guilty, was waiving his right to the case being heard in the District Court and was instead opting for trial by judge and jury in the Circuit Criminal Court. He asked the court to ensure that video footage from the nightclub be made available.
Judge John Garavan returned him for trial to Galway Circuit Court on October 2nd. He was released on bail on his own surety of £900, £300 of which had to be paid into court yesterday.
