RIGHT-WING Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen, elected for the first time last year, has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a House of Commons secretary.
The 46-year-old MP, who won a seat in Leicestershire after a strong swing from Labour, was arrested at his London flat in the early hours of yesterday by the police after they were called to the property.
Mr Bridgen was later released on bail, and will return to court in July. The House of Commons employee does not work for Mr Bridgen, who is a married father of two children.
Previously Mr Bridgen served as a royal marines officer.
Later, he worked for his family’s vegetable processing business and served as the East Midlands chairman of the Institute of Directors.
While he has been relatively low-key since his arrival in the Commons, Mr Bridgend last week attracted some attention after he criticised demands for health reform plans to be watered down, saying that the government would be caving in to “Stalinist protectionist elements” if it backed down now.
