The new government must take a firm stand against British Nuclear Fuel's application for a pollution licence which seeks to change permissible emission levels from Sellafield, the Green Party said yesterday.

The party's Louth candidate, Mr Neil McCann, accused BNFL of attempting "a deceptive balancing act" which would increase limits for some radio-active substances while reducing limits for others.

"It is juggling with two different sets of radioactive substances while walking the tightrope in a dangerous environmental experiment."
