A Canadian tourist who died following a car crash in Wexford earlier this week has been identified as the wife of a former head of the Vancouver Olympics.

Deborah Sharp-Furlong (48) was badly injured following a collision last Thursday and later died in Tallaght Hospital.

Last night it emerged she was the wife of the former CEO of the Vancouver Olympics John Furlong.

In a statement, Mr Furlong said he was beyond words at the loss.

"It is with a broken heart that I must tell you of the death of my beloved wife Deborah Sharp Furlong as a result of an automobile accident while driving alone on vacation in the southeast of Ireland on April 11th," he said.

Ms Sharp-Furlong was driving on a wide stretch of road at Coolishall Upper when she collided with a 4 x 4 on the R772 between Gorey and Clough at about 10.30am.

Emergency services responded and she was removed by air ambulance to Tallaght Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the second vehicle received minor injuries and was treated for shock and trauma.

Ms Sharp-Furlong was a TV producer and had been married to Mr Furlong for about a year.
