Drop-off sites for Christmas trees will open in hundreds of locations within the next few days.
Opening dates for the sites vary from one local authority to another, with some accepting trees from Friday and others opening a little later. Larger cities and towns will have multiple drop-off sites. Most of the sites will remain open until mid-January.
The Irish Times will publish a comprehensive list of sites later this week.
Dublin City Council will also be operating a pilot kerbside collection of Christmas trees in Rathmines, Sandymount, Ringsend, Ballsbridge, Cabra, Ashtown and Drumcondra.
Householders can buy tags at local retail outlets for €3.50 and tie them to their Christmas trees which can then be left out for collection on the normal weekly refuse collection day.
Meanwhile, all householders in Dublin whose green recycling bins are full this month will be allowed to leave overflow material beside the bin and it will be collected until January 31st.
A city council statement explained: "Additional dry, recyclable material may be left beside the green bin on the due collection day. The additional material will be collected provided it is left on the footpath in a safe manner, that it is clean and bound securely and it only contains material that normally goes into the green bin.
"The material should not be put into plastic bags and any large cardboard boxes or sheets should be cut into smaller pieces or brought to the nearest bring centre."
Oxigen, which operates the green bin service for the four Dublin local authorities, stressed that people must break up larger cardboard boxes and must not leave material wrapped in plastic bags. It also said it would not be accepting polystyrene.
